Janka Hardness Scale

Wood Flooring Information :: Janka Hardness Scale

The Janka rating is a measure of the amount of force required to push a .444" diameter steel ball half way into a piece of wood. It basically measures a wood's resistance to denting. The higher the number, the greater its resistance to denting.

Northern Red Oak, which has a Janka rating of 1290, is the industry benchmark for comparing the relative hardness of different wood species. Oak is the most common wood flooring species. Generally, exotic species such as Brazilian Cherry, are denser than domestics like maple and oak.

Although hardwood flooring is durable enough to withstand normal use, it can dent with a hard enough impact. Fortunately, the natural beauty of wood floors can easily be restored by sanding and refinishing the flooring.
